MORMON BELIEFS The Atonement of Jesus Christ The Articles of Faith in the Mormon Church are 13 statements that explain the basic beliefs among members. These Articles are considered scripture along with the Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants and Pearl of Great Price. They are not, however, a complete summary of the beliefs. The Mormon Church is guided by a living Prophet and continues with revelation and inspiration in these latter days.
Article of Faith #3 states that: "We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel."
The Atonement of Jesus Christ is the most important event in the history of the world. The Atonement gives everyone who has received a mortal body the opportunity to be reconciled to our Father in Heaven. Meaning that, Christ suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane and on the cross to atone for each person's sins. Without this sacrifice being made by our elder brother Jesus Christ, no one would have the opportunity to live with our Heavenly Father again. Jesus Christ "came into the world…to be crucified for the world, and to bear the sins of the world, and to sanctify the world, and to cleanse it from all unrighteousness; that through him all might be saved."1 'As part of His Atonement, Christ took upon Himself the pains, sicknesses, and infirmities of all people. He understands the suffering because He has experienced it.'2
To make this Atonement fully effective, there must be a complete faith in Jesus Christ and a desire to become more like Him. The Mormon belief is that if we each repent of our sins, be baptized by immersion, receive the Holy Ghost and obey all of God's commandments, then through the Atonement, we can return and live with our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ forever.
The more we keep the commandments and strive to become more like our Savior, the more we want to do His will. "He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him."3
