What do Mormons believe?

What do Mormons believe is a questions often asked by non-members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Just like other Christian religions Mormons believe in God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost. Unlike many religions Mormon belief teaches that God, Christ, and the Holy Ghost are distinct and separate individuals who are one in purpose and doctrine. Members of the Mormon Church strive to keep God's commandments so that as Christ said, "they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us." 1 When any person follows Christ they become "one" with Him and the Father.

What do Mormons believe about the Bible? Mormons use the Bible as scripture and believe that it is the word of God just as other Christian religions do. They also believe that some basic truths have been lost or misinterpreted as the Bible has been translated and copied by scribes throughout the years. In conjunction with the Bible Mormons use the Book of Mormon. It is another testament of Christ and reaffirms the witness of Christ's disciples in the New Testament. Christ has often said, "in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established." 2

Mormon history shows that Mormons are a temple building people. It is within Mormon temples that the fullness of the blessings of the gospel is received including sealing of families for eternity. Mormon Temples are considered to be the house of the Lord and only those who are worthy are allowed to enter.

Priesthood authority, which is the power of God, was taken from the earth after the deaths of Christ's apostles. In latter-days the priesthood was given to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery by the laying on of hands from first John the Baptist, then Peter, James, and John. Because Joseph Smith had the priesthood he had the authority to organize Christ's true church upon the earth.

One of the requirements to enter the kingdom of God is baptism. Mormons are baptized by immersion following the pattern set by Jesus Christ when John the Baptist baptized Him. After members are baptized they receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost, by the laying on of hands. This means that as long as they live worthily they have the companionship of the Holy Ghost to guide, teach, and protect them.
