Mormon Missionaries

Many people have already seen the Mormon missionaries in their cities or towns, even if they don't know who they are.  The are easy to identify because of their   appearance which includes a white shirt and a tie and a black nametag stating that they are representatives of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church).

Mormon missionaries are working throughout the world spreading the message that the gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored to the earth in the latter days. But who are they and exactly what do they do?

 Who are Mormon missionaries?

The Mormon Missionaries are young men and women who devote eighteen months to two years of their life to preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ as restored through living prophets like Joseph Smith.  These young people put schooling, dating, and careers on hold because they know that the message they share is important for the whole world to hear.

These are a few interesting facts you should know about Mormon Missionaries:

Ø      They pay their own way, or get help from family and friends

Ø      Men are called Elders, women are called Sisters.  These are titles not names.

Ø      They can only call home twice a year: on Mother’s Day and Christmas

Ø      There are over 55,000 missionaries in 165 countries

Ø      Many must learn a foreign language

Ø      They work six days a week from 9:30 A.M. to 9:30 P.M. spreading their message

Mormon missionaries are earnest and sometimes people think they are a little over-zealous, but that is only because they believe that their message is important for everyone to hear.

What does a Mormon missionary do?

The main purpose of Mormon missionaries' work  is to teach the gospel to those who are interested. They share a message about Jesus Christ and his Atonement. Mormon missionaries also teach about our Heavenly Father’s great plan of salvation, which allows families to be together forever.

Missionaries also perform community service. They serve in rest homes, hospitals, orphanages, YMCA’s, and teach English among other things. They also help when natural disasters strike. Special older missionaries are sometimes called to serve by assisting with health and welfare such as building wells in Africa, instructing doctors in South America, or other needs.

Mormon missionaries are often far from home and welcome the opportunity to talk with and teach others about the message of Christ’s restored church that they so strongly believe in.

Why does the Mormon Church send missionaries?

Imagine that you had a priceless gift that you knew could help other people and change their lives. You would want to share that gift. Mormon missionaries believe that they have a priceless gift, the restored gospel of The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
