Jeff Kent second base Toronto Blue Jays New York Mets Cleveland Indians San Francisco Giants Houston Astros Los Angeles Dodgers |
Originally drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 20th round of the 1989 draft
out of the University of California at Berkeley. April 12, 1992 marked his Major
League debut. A five-time All-Star, Kent won the National League MVP Award in
2000 and has finished in the N.L.'s top 10 in MVP voting in three other
seasons. While quietly establishing himself as one of the best hitting second
basemen in MLB history, Kent is certain to be inducted into Baseball's Hall of
Fame. He is the only player to have hit more than 300 career home runs as a
second baseman and has hit 20 or more home runs in 11 of his 15 full MLB
seasons. His nearly 1400 RBI's would place him fourth on the Hall of Fame's
career RBI leaders for second basemen. "I'm a Mormon . I don't do a lot of the off-the-field activities that athletes are known to do. And I guess I've created a world that is unlike the typical world of a professional athlete." "I'm a calm and peaceful player, versus an emotional player. I might show a lot of emotion out there, but inside, I really try to calm my emotions and be peaceful in my play. I think a lot of people sometimes might misinterpret how much I care about the game because I don't like to talk about it, and that's far from the truth. I love this game with a passion."

Vernon Law pitcher Pittsburg Pirates |
During
his playing career, Law earned the nickname "Deacon" for his clean Mormon
lifestyle. Nicknamed the "Preacher" by his teammates because of his deep religious beliefs. He was largely responsible for the Pirates' World Championship in 1960. Legend has it that while Law was on the bench, his teammates in the dugout regaled the umpire with profane language. Knowing Law and his convictions, the umpire approached him and said he didn't belong in the company of those men that day and sent him to the showers. "Vern Law - The Power of Prayer" by Ray Robinson
